Where should printers go to educate themselves on the interior design market?
If you’re ready to do some research and networking in the interior design market, here are some suggestions on trade shows and professional organizations worth checking out.
Professional Organizations
IIDA – International Interior Design Association
The mission and vision of IIDA is to provide “meaningful resources to commercial interior designers and their clients to advance the profession and enhance business value. Our vision is to support culture, enhance business value, solve problems, and positively impact the health and well-being of people’s lives through a greater understanding of interior design.” A global organization, they have a network of 15,000+ members across 58 countries. Their local chapters host events, continuing education opportunities, networking, mentoring and advocate on legislative concerns.
ASID – American Society of Interior Designers
ASID “advances the interior design profession and communicates the impact of design on the human experience.” Through events, education, outreach, and community engagement, ASID strives “to advance the interior design profession and, in the process, to demonstrate and celebrate the power of design to positively change people’s lives.” This is a national organization with 13,500 members and 350 local chapters.
IDS – The Interior Design Society
IDS is a professional organization dedicated to the residential interior design industry. Their mission says they are an “exclusive professional association serving the design community, with the focus of helping our diverse members grow their businesses, develop their talents, inspire each other, and use our voices to impact our collective communities.” They have chapters across the country and a virtual chapter.
Trade Shows
Per their website, “NeoCon has served as the world’s leading platform and most important event of the year for the commercial design industry since 1969. A launch pad for innovation – NeoCon offers ideas and introductions that shape the built environment today and into the future.” NeoCon takes place every June in at The Merchandise Mart in Chicago, Illinois. The 2024 show dates are June 10 – 12. (I exhibit here each year with my company, Design Pool. If you attend, please find me on the 7th floor and introduce yourself. I’ll be in Booth 7-3050.)
The HD Expo & Conference describes itself as, “The largest single destination for hospitality product discovery in the U.S. It’s where buyers find the products to bring their projects to life.” The next event will take place at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on April 30 – May 2, 2024.
A show devoted to the healthcare design industry, HCD Conference & Expo is “Devoted to how the design of responsibly built environments directly impacts the safety, operation, clinical outcomes, and financial success of healthcare facilities, both now and into the future.” Their next event takes place October 5 – 8, 2024 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Boutique Design New York (BDNY) is “the leading trade fair and conference for hospitality’s boutique and lifestyle design community.” Their website continues, “it’s the curated, creative event of the industry—bringing designers, architects, purchasing agents, hoteliers, owners, and developers together with inventive manufacturers of design elements for hospitality interiors for a highly curated experience.” This event takes place each November in New York City. The 2024 event is happening November 10 and 11.
Even if you or someone on your team can’t attend one of these events in person, stalking them online can be useful. I have learned a lot by reading about what types of programming is taking place, who is speaking, and what is being discussed. Also, following along on social media the day of the events gives insight into what is trending and what people are excited about.
