It’s that time of year again when Pantone and many big paint companies pick their color of the year. These picks are always fascinating snapshots. They all look back and where we’ve been and then forward at where we’re going. With that in mind, they pick a color that reflects this particular moment in time.
Why does this matter? Because these colors inevitably impact what colors will be trending in the upcoming year across industries. At Design Pool, we pored over everyone’s picks and rounded up their selections.
There were five main themes in the colors of the year
Nature
Nature and biophilic design have been notable trends in residential and commercial interiors. Many color choices reflected the urge to bring the outdoors in and help people feel more connected to nature.
Self-Care
Living through a global pandemic has brought new meaning to self-care. It’s less about pampering at the spa (although that’s always good!) and more about making meaningful changes to lead a happier and healthier life.
Restoration
As we emerge from the pandemic, people are looking to restore a sense of normality. Many color choices reflected a sense of nostalgia as people looked back while updating for the future.
Rejuvenation
People are moving into the world with a renewed sense of optimism, fun, and confidence. Color picks, such as Pantone’s Viva Magenta, speak to the urge to confidently bring about change in one’s life.
Grounding
An underlying sense of uncertainty has marked the last few years. This unease has inspired the need to feel grounded and safe in the spaces we inhabit. Many of the rich neutrals chosen speak to this grounding effect the natural world has.
These themes tie into trends we’ve seen at 2022 trade shows
People want to connect with a place and with each other, and well-designed spaces help people do that effectively. They want to create places that foster a connection to a local community and can also adapt to a quickly changing world. Designers are facilitating this by creating built environments that allow the people using these spaces to have authentic experiences.
Consumers are also demanding transparency when it comes to sustainability. Designers are responding by wanting even more information about the materials they source. Where was a product made, with what, and by whom? Also, what happens to it at the end of its life cycle?
As we head into 2023, it’s an exciting time for wide-format printing to grow in the interior design market. I can’t wait to see how!
