Innovation. Merriam Webster defines that word as “a new idea, method, or device; or the introduction of something new.” In the past, when we talked about wide-format innovation, it was sure to be stories about interesting applications or new technologies changing the way the industry and print buyers think about print. And while that is still very much a part of the equation, in 2020 it has come to mean something else: surviving through a very tough year, with challenges no one could have predicted.
As this year — defined by a worldwide pandemic, a contentious Presidential election, and civil unrest — comes to a close, Wide-format Impressions wanted to take a look back at some of the companies who still found ways to innovate successfully. On the following pages, you’ll find a wide range of companies from around the world, that define “innovation” in very different ways. The only thread that ties them together? They have all found ways to be successful in a year when many have struggled to keep the doors open.
Innovation, and the evolution of the wide-format signage and graphics industry, hasn’t been slowed down by difficult times. Rather, it has allowed the creative spirit and determination of business owners to rise to the surface, with impacts that will be felt for years to come.
