In the “Essential Small Business Strategies” workshop on Wednesday, Aaron Montgomery of MontCo Consulting talked about the importance of social media to small business success. He reminded attendees that it’s not a question of whether to use social media, but how to do it well.
Social media is accessible, cost-effective, extremely targetable and measurable. It’s easy to adjust if a post isn’t generating as much engagement as you hoped for. You can have a good social media marketing campaign for about $25 to $50 a month.
“The key to any marketing is to get someone to an action that you would like them to take,” Montgomery said. Instead of simply racking up likes on your Facebook page, you want people to take actions that will help them get to know more about your company and employees, like visiting your website.
Montgomery offered some useful suggestions.
Find a niche to focus on with genuine interest. “When you connect with people who share common interests, it should be easy to talk to them about your business,” Montgomery said.
Start with your customers. Social media works because we all love to share things that make us feel good about ourselves. Post pictures online of the Breast Cancer Awareness t-shirts you printed; your customer will likely share it to their connections.
Fill out your profile completely and make the header look good. Consider it a “billboard” for your company. Instead of using your logo, use photos featuring your employees.
