As the next generation of new talent comes into the workforce, it is important to understand what they want in a career and how to attract them to a job in printing. Donna Painter, Assistant Professor at Millersville University, will lead a session at the 2018 SGIA Expo detailing how to do just that. It will take place today at 10:30 am in room N117.
There is a constant need to refresh talent in all industries. Printing is no different, especially with all the technical skills needed. To continue to do this, print shops need to understand how to attract next generation workers to their business.
Painter will discuss the perception problem she feels the printing industry has with younger people during her session. She feels that both young people and their parents do not see the print industry as one flush with career opportunities. She will discuss this issue at length, go into some of the reasons why this is the perception and why fixing it is so important.
She will then go over hiring challenges in the industry and strategies to overcome tthem. Finally, as an assistant professor herself, Painter will identify sources in the education sector she feels can be useful for identifying new talent.
Being able to identify and attract new talent to a business is vital. The best ways to do this tend to shift with each generation. Painter’s presentation is meant to give attendees an idea of how to hire the next one, both by explaining issues they may face and by giving them ways to solve those problems.
