The future of any industry lies in the hands of its youth. Fresh perspectives and new ideas are the lifeblood that keeps companies moving forward. As we look to the future, it’s clear we need to do more to inspire and empower the next generation of leaders in our field.
But despite being a dynamic field full of opportunities, we struggle to compete with the brand power of Silicon Valley and other “sexier” industries. If we want to continue innovating and leading the future of print, we need to inspire and attract the next generation of rising stars.
The stark reality is that enrollment in graphic communications university programs has declined — and many programs have vanished. It’s impossible not to notice the aging workforce and lack of young faces at industry conferences. Experience is invaluable, but without an influx of new energy and ideas, any industry risks becoming stagnant.
The root causes of this talent drought are complex. For one, students today often need more awareness of the wide range of creative roles and career paths available in print. Many envision it as an old-fashioned industry that needs more dynamic opportunities to make a real impact. We must showcase the innovative technologies, creative products, and opportunities to drive businesses forward and offer young minds inspiration to shape the future.
Work must also be done to improve representation and inclusion within the printing industry. Like many STEM fields, it currently skews heavily male and has fewer professionals from minority backgrounds than other industries. Recruiting a diverse talent pool and demonstrating a commitment to equitable hiring is vital.
Once new talent is in the door, we also need help with retention. Younger employees often need more mentorship, training, and pathways for advancement. We have to nurture rising stars by pairing them with experienced mentors who can help them quickly gain skills and maximize their talents.
This magazine issue spotlighting some of the rising stars in printing is so important. These individuals represent the future of our industry. Their passion for work and eagerness to drive change should inspire us all. When students and young professionals see the real difference they can make with a career in printing, it starts dispelling misconceptions.
This issue is just a small showcase of the top talent ready to chart the industry’s future course. By continuing to celebrate their achievements, foster an inclusive environment, and provide development opportunities, we can attract more of this younger talent while retaining those already in our ranks. The challenges are significant but manageable. If we take proactive steps to engage young talent, the future of innovation and growth in printing will be bright.
