Four Crystal City Buildings Wrapped with Local Artwork

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — July 24, 2018 — Investing in public art is bigger than ever — creating value culturally, aesthetically, and economically. JBG Smith recently acquired four vacant buildings in Crystal City, VA, hoping to revitalize the urban neighborhood until a plan was made for the structures. JBG commissioned two local artists to create abstract murals that would be digitally enhanced and wrapped top to bottom on all four sides of each structure.

Without knowing how long these building wraps will be in place, JBG needed the most durable material without sacrificing quality, which is why Britten's Architectural Mesh was chosen as the substrate.

For more than 30 years, Britten has been designing, printing, and installing wind-permeable mesh on buildings all across the country. In addition to printing and installing large-format ads and community artwork, Britten is known for producing building façade replicas that are hand-drawn by CEO Paul Britten. "Building wrap replications originally started in Europe because local governments didn't want to lose tourism revenue while buildings were undergoing renovations," said Paul. In recent years, it has become a trend in the states and is making passersby do double takes. Exemplary facades in New York City have included the iconic Plaza Hotel, Porcelanosa USA and Third Church of Christ, Scientist.
