Father-Son Duo Takes on the Luxury Gift Box Industry with Mimaki Technology
Flashback to six years ago, father and son team, Bashar and Bilal Madwar, were laying the groundwork to launch their own packaging business. “In 2012, we [my father and I] participated at the Luxe Pack Show. We were interested in entering the market of luxury paperboard boxes, mainly for the chocolate industry,” says Bilal Madwar. “However, at the show, we noticed that most of the customers were from the cosmetic industry, and quickly realized that people were looking for luxury gift boxes that they could obtain in a short timeframe.”
After the show, the duo founded Madovar Packaging, a Canadian, family-owned business that supplies and manufactures luxury gift boxes for the North American market. The company’s mission is to be well known for its quality, and grow awareness about its unique packaging system.
As the business began to gain traction, there were three factors that the Madwars decided were most important when developing products: delivery time, quality, and customization. They also receive requests from customers to produce a small amount of boxes with white ink. The increasing need for personalization, quantity, and quick turnarounds led the Madwars to turn to Mimaki, which had printers designed for these specific purposes. “Offset printers don’t have white or clear ink, and can’t produce high-quality items in short runs. Screenprinters have minimum quantity requirements to fulfill an order. Mimaki provided the solution we needed — small-sized equipment with extensive features in our price point.”
Madovar Packaging worked with All Graphic Supplies, a qualified Mimaki (Booths 5216, 5616, 5620) dealer, to purchase its first Mimaki printer, a UJF-6042 MkII. The compact UV-LED flatbed allowed the company to produce customized gift boxes with both white and clear ink in less time. The Madwars were so thrilled with the results of their UJF printer, they purchased another Mimaki machine. This time, the JFX200-2513, a wide-format UV-LED flatbed that offered the speed, print area, and added features for the company to tackle more customized boxes within a production run.
While working with Mimaki printers, the Madwars were impressed with the technology of these machines. The technology behind Mimaki’s printheads — specifically the ability to set logical seek — stood out from competitors. As a luxury gift box company, it’s vital to be able to easily print high-quality logos in the right place on the material, while also printing in a timely fashion to produce optimum quantities. “Mimaki works differently. It reads the design so that the printhead goes directly to the place you need it to print,” Bilal Madwar says. This process is known as logical seek, which sets the scan movable area during printing.
Additionally, the company has enjoyed that Mimaki’s machines are highly dependable. “The printers are very reliable and simple to operate. We haven’t experienced a situation where one of our printers couldn’t handle the workload or the number of hours we worked it. I can also operate the machine myself, and don’t need highly experienced print operators to run my equipment.”
Today, Madovar Packaging partners with leading brands in the cosmetic industry, prestigious agencies, as well as independent brands and startups. Just recently, the company launched its first fully recyclable product, the E-luxe box, and is hoping to expand in this category very soon.
Madovar Packaging’s success has been driven by the ability to manufacture customized luxury gift boxes with the use of Mimaki’s printers. “We continue to work with Mimaki because they have provided the right solutions for us. We have gone from a simple box company to a full service, independent luxury manufacturer with the help of Mimaki,” he says.
